When I first became an Executive Chef, I was paid by a base salary plus a performance bonus. In the name of transparency, the company sent me a complicated Excel Spreadsheet outlining how the bonus worked. It meant nothing to me; it might as well have been written in an Alien language. The language of business numbers was beyond me at the time.
As I wanted to be sure of what my day to day actions meant to my pay-cheque, I endeavored to discover how the spread sheet worked; to make sense of the Alien language they call accounting. Ultimately, if I made decisions that would affect my pay-cheque in a positive way, it would also impact the business in a positive way. It was a win-win for the company and for me.
After working with the sheet for about a year, I discovered a formula error. According to my calculations the company owed me thousands in bonuses unpaid. Although a mistake, one small error made a huge difference to my pay-outs. By learning how the sheet worked, I was able to confirm that I was making sound decisions for the success of my department. Also, in deciphering the language of business, I uncovered a small error that was worth a lot of money to me. I realized the power of understanding the numbers.
The lesson is, if you, the business owner, are not financially literate in your own business, you may be losing money in many ways. You may be missing out on money making strategies, managing expenses that do not make sense, affecting pricing that is falling short of keeping you profitable and missing outright errors.
